A GoPro anunciou, nesta segunda-feira (8), que não vai mais fabricar drones. A empresa especializada em câmeras de ação disse em seu relatório para investidores que não foi capaz de superar a competitividade no mercado de dispositivos aéreos. O Karma, único modelo desenvolvido pela marca, continuará a ser vendido até o fim dos estoques. A fabricante informou, entretanto, que continuará a dar suporte ao aparelho.
O Karma enfrenta problemas desde seu lançamento. Em novembro de 2016, um mês após chegar às lojas, o drone sofreu um recall. Na ocasião, a bateria do dispositivo poderia descarregar por completo em pleno voo, o que poderia causar acidentes graves. O modelo só voltou a ser vendido em fevereiro de 2017. Apesar dos problemas, no ano passado, o drone da GoPro foi o segundo modelo mais vendido em sua faixa de preço, de acordo com a fabricante.
No relatório, a marca explica que um dos motivos para a saída do mercado de drones está em manter uma margem de lucro em meio a competição. Outro fator está na regulamentação de drones propostas por alguns governos. A GoPro acredita que as limitações propostas por alguns países vão diminuir o mercado de drones no futuro. “Além disso, um ambiente regulatório hostil na Europa e os Estados Unidos provavelmente reduzirá o mercado endereçável total nos próximos anos”, diz o comunicado.
Enquanto a GoPro sai do mercado, a empresa chinesa DJI segue sua expansão investindo em lojas físicas. Em dezembro de 2017, a companhia abriu sua primeira loja no Brasil, em um shopping no Rio de Janeiro.
GoPro em apuros
Não é só no mercado de drones em que a GoPro enfrenta dificuldades. A competição acirrada no comércio das câmeras de ação também coloca em xeque o futuro da empresa americana. Para tentar sobreviver, a fabricante anunciou uma grande reestruturação, com demissão de funcionários e corte de custos.
Neste ano, a companhia terá menos de mil empregados. Vale lembrar que em 2017 o número chegou a mais de 1.200. Além disso, o CEO da GoPro, Nicholas Woodman, terá seu salário reduzido para simbólicos US$ 1 (cerca de R$ 3,20). Com essas medidas, a empresa espera reduzir as despesas em US$ 80 milhões.
