Mesmo 34 anos após sua criação, Dragon Ball ainda é um fenômeno que marca presença em diversas mídias e que atualmente até mesmo conta com novos anime e mangá. Mas como exatamente tudo isso começou?
Uma nova tradução feita pela Kazenshuu do Daizenshuu 2, um dos livros sobre a franquia que foi lançado em 1995 no Japão, revelou uma entrevista do autor Akira Toriyama, que explica como chegou ao conceito que eventualmente se tornou Dragon Ball. Segundo ele, foi tudo graças ao ator Jackie Chan:
Eu tinha acabado de terminar ‘Dr. Slump’ e estava pensando sobre o que deveria fazer para meu próximo trabalho. Eu tive muitas reuniões com meu editor na época, Torishima-san. Acontece que na época eu gostava muito dos filmes de Jackie Chan e tinha visto ‘Drunken Master’ (O Mestre Invencível) dúzias de vezes. Já que eu gostava dessas coisas, o Torishima-san me aconselhou tentar fazer um mangá de kung-fu, então eu desenhei uma edição única chamada ‘Dragon Boy’. Ela teve uma recepção incrivelmente positiva dos leitores, então eu decidi seguir este caminho para meu próximo trabalho.
Toriyama em seguida explica que, já que Dr. Slump tinha uma ambientação ocidental, ele queria destacar as influencias chinesas neste novo trabalho e por isso decidiu basear a obra na lenda “Jornada Para o Oeste”, mas com elementos modernizados.
Goku também quase foi um macaco, como no conto original, mas Toriyama achou que não seria muito inovador. No entanto, ele queria que o protagonista tivesse uma característica única, então acabou recebendo a cauda. Já as Esferas do Dragão foram adicionadas como uma motivação para que os personagens saíssem em uma jornada, como no mito de “Jornada Para o Oeste”.
No início, as influências da lenda chinesa eram ainda mais evidentes. “Bulma era Tripitaka, Oolong era Zhu Bajie e Yamcha era Sha Wujing”, explica o autor, que tinha a intenção de terminar a obra depois que os heróis coletassem as Esferas.
No entanto, este não foi o caso, como sabemos, e a franquia acabou acumulando 34 anos de história, com um novo mangá no Japão e um anime, Dragon Ball Super, que é transmitido dublado pelo Cartoon Network e também está disponível com legendas em português pela Crunchyroll.
